DALLAS – September 18, 2012 – Hubert Sagnieres, Essilor International Chairman and CEO, was honored by Special Olympics Chairman and CEO, Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, at a Special Olympics Dinner on Sept. 13, at the National Museum of The American Indian in Washington DC. Sagnieres was recognized for his continued global leadership and advocacy with the Essilor Vision Foundation.
“The Essilor Vision Foundation’s commitment to the Special Olympics is one that is near and dear to my heart,” said Sagnieres. “It’s one of the many ways Essilor chooses to give the gift of sight to those who might not otherwise be able to afford it, and we are committed to helping these athletes experience better lives through better sight.”
Since 2002, the Essilor Vision Foundation has been the exclusive global supplier of corrective lenses for the Special Olympics-Lions Club International Opening Eyes vision care program. As part of the Healthy Athletes program launched in 1997, Opening Eyes promotes healthy vision for Special Olympic athletes and includes vision screenings, corrective and sports protective eyewear for athletes in need and referrals for athletes requiring follow-up treatment and services.
“We are extremely grateful for the support Hubert and the Essilor Vision Foundation have provided to our athletes over the past 10 years,” said Shriver. “Their dedication to creating a positive and lasting change in the lives of athletes with disabilities speaks volumes to Essilor’s mission to help the world see better.”
The Essilor Vision Foundation strives to eliminate poor vision and its lifelong consequences on a global scale. The Foundation provides screenings, eye exams and other vision resources to children who can’t afford them and educates the general public about good vision and the critical role it plays in literacy, education, society, community safety and the economy. Since 2009, the Foundation has provided more than 86,000 eye exams and glasses worldwide.
Through their global initiatives, the Essilor Vision Foundation has provided eye exams and glasses to more than 21,000 U.S. children; set up kiosks in 24 cities in China to provide initial vision screenings; and organized vans to travel around India providing glasses to those in need in rural areas.
