Clear Vision For Back-To-School Success

By Essilor News

Just when you’re getting used to having the kids at home for the summer, it’s time to send them back to school. And with that realization comes the last-minute scheduling of doctors’ appointments and check-ups. One thing many parents don’t realize, however, is just how crucial it is to check their child’s vision before school starts.

About 80 percent of a child’s learning is done through his or her eyes, yet 35 percent of children have never seen an eye care professional, making vision impairment one of the most prevalent disabling conditions among children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s why experts agree it’s a must to get a child’s eyes checked yearly and equip them with the right tools to learn and grow.

For kids who already wear glasses, seeing an eye care professional is necessary. Children’s lenses endure everything from fingerprints to scratches and even harsh glare from computer screens or fluorescent lights. That means they can have a harder time seeing the board and keeping glasses clean and clear. Looking through obstructed lenses can also cause tired, strained eyes.

Eye care is important the entire school day — even in recess and gym class. Studies show children spend significantly more time outdoors than adults, which increases their exposure to the most powerful source of ultraviolet (UV) rays and blue light: the sun. Couple this with LED screens (tablets, smart phones and computers) both at school and home, and children’s eyes are exposed far more frequently and at an earlier age to harmful rays that could damage their eyes permanently.
